Kličanj Werk I is the first fortification in the numeration of the Trebinje fortification belt. It is located at an altitude of 700 meters above sea level, at Kličanj which is designated on some maps as Kličanje.
The fortification was built between 1883 and 1884. There is an inscription on the entrance portal with the year 1883 and the initials FJI, meaning Franz Joseph I. This fortification was meant to control the northern approach to Trebinje, especially from the north-west direction of Popovo field and the crossing over the Trebišnjica river, coming from the direction of Dubrovnik.
The fortification has a hexagonal cannon platform and the accommodation has the shape of a rough square with one curved wall.

The roof is single-pitched, raised at the front to accommodate the embrasures in the attic. There are two caponiers at the corners. The fortification was surrounded by a large ditch and four rows of barbed wire, while the cannon platform had five rows of barbed wire around it. Caltrops were strewn about the caponiers. The cannon platform had eight openings for cannons with steel guards mounted on supports. Shells were stored beneath the platform and transported to the cannons by lift. The courtyard also had two reserve positions for cannons.
The accommodation wing had a ground and first floor, and a gallery with embrasures in the attic. There was a water cistern underground that could hold 31 cubic meters. At the front of the fortification there was a defensive machicolation. The fortification was armed with four M1904 9 cm cannons, the crew was made up of three commanders who were officers and 78 soldiers (39 infantry, 36 artillery, and 3 engineers). It was also equipped with nine gun mounts, a light signal station, a place for firing flares, lighting and a water pump to bring water up from the cistern.
There were also three fougasse mines arranged around the front. In addition to a courtyard and firewood storage, the accommodation quarters also had storage spaces for ammunition, general goods, a kitchen, and common rooms for the artillery soldiers, the officers, and the infantry soldiers.
