Golo brdo – Werk VII – is one of the largest and best-preserved fortifications of its kind in the Trebinje area. It is located at an altitude of 795 meters above sea level.
The accommodation for soldiers manning the fortress makes a V shape that connects to a hexagonal cannon platform that had eight openings for cannons. Two caponiers were found at the ends for direct defence of the fortification, and between them was the entryway and courtyard.
From its position, it covered the south-east entrance into Trebinje and completed the defence belt between fortifications numbered ‘eight’ and ‘six’. The number of personnel stationed there changed as needed and it had all the elements a fortress needed (a water cistern, rooms for soldiers, a stable for horses and donkeys, etc.).
On the left and right side were reserve positions for cannons, mobile batteries and for infantry reinforcements of the defence belt. The construction of this new large fortification of Golo brdo VII started in 1914 because rifles had become more accurate over time, making fortifications less secure. That is why construction of fortifications began expanding underground with thick concrete layers and iron reinforcements, while cannons were placed in rotating steel domes. The Golo brdo fortification was designed for a crew of four officers and 176 soldiers. Their accommodation was planned on three floors along the sheltered slope of the hill with two howitzer domes mounted on top, as well as two domes with machine guns and optical devices for observation and cannon fire control. Underground caverns were dug, large water cisterns were built for making concrete, as well as accommodation for construction workers and engineers.
